The birds of the Mediterranean, a singular poster

In recent years I have used my illustrations in a number of different types of posters. One of the posters that has given me most pleasure is that of the Action Plan for the Conservation of Bird Species in the Mediterranean, published by the United Nations Environment Programme–Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP-MAP). This poster combines images of birds and their habitats – from Audouin’s Gull in the Ebro Delta to Pelicans migrating over Israel  – on a subtle background of the areas of the Mediterranean in which they are found. Barcelona Aquarium: Mediterranean submarine environments

This series began in 2002 with a large-scale illustration of Posidonia seabed meadows that was largely based on a children’s book I had illustrated. Subsequently, we have published two further posters, one on beaches and offshore sea bottoms, and the other on coral seabeds. In these cases, the finished product consists of my illustrations placed on a background collage of my photographs in a technique I refer to as ‘In their element’. Top

Getting to know Nature – The Biodiversity of the Catalan-speaking Countries

Within Catalan-speaking areas, my best-known posters are without doubt the series published quarterly by the magazine Presència devoted to the biodiversity of the Catalan-speaking Countries. The series began in 2005 and came to an end in 2012 and, despite – or even thanks to (!) – their somewhat over-rigid, school-textbook style, have become very popular. There must be almost a million of these posters in circulation given that tens of thousands have been printed of the twenty-odd titles that were published. The series was started by Jordi Sargatal, director of the foundation Territori i Paisatge, with support from Miquel Riera, then editor of Presència, and advice from experts in each subject. The posters’ texts are concise – some I wrote myself – and have become an accessible and important way of increasing awareness of our national biodiversity. Tornar

Ecosistemes aquàtics de Catalunya

This series consists of a profound view (half the posters are of underwater systems!) of the main freshwater ecosystems found in Catalonia for which I once again combined photography and illustrations (see In their element). As in the posters for Presència, only the illustrations but not the actual design of the poster are my work. This collection is still in print and can also be downloaded from the webpage of the Catalan Government’s Ministry of Agriculture. Go back. Top
