HMW5: more than just kangaroos!
I’ve now illustrated almost half the species for the next volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World, devoted to the marsupials, and so far I’ve not done any kangaroos!
The marsupials are a very heterodox group and we should not think just of the classic kangaroo or the famous koala when marsupials are mentioned.
In fact, many marsupials do not live in Australia but in America and on both continents they seem to fill all the different ecological niches available to small-to-medium-size mammals in these continents’ ecosystems. When I draw these marsupials I can’t help but think that I’m just drawing shrews, mice, weasels, squirrels, moles, genets, monkeys or dormice!!
Here you have a few examples:

Will the Thylacine and other extinct marsupials be illustrated in HMW5?

Hi Melanie
Sadly, extinct species are not included in the HMW series, so the Tyhlacine won’t be illustrated.
For further details, please contact the editors, Lynx Edicions, at lynx@hbw.com
Thanks for you interest

Hi, Toni
I’m wondering if you would know how many species will be included in HMW 5, if you know. I’m very interested in knowing, and have you illustrated the Monotremes yet? I can’t wait to see all your amazing artwork in this upcoming book, and when do you think this book will come out? I’m 15 years old, I wish I was older so I could be involved in this book, and especially the artwork.
Sincerely,
Connor

Hi Connor,
We are still working on it, but HMW5 will include something around 340 species. When I was 15 years old I wished I could get involved in the HBW, and here I am, illustrating the HMW! Who knows… maybe sometime in the future you’ll get involved in the HRW (Handbook of Reptiles), or maybe the HFW (Handbook of Fishes…). I don’t know if Lynx is planning to do these two, but you never know…
Keep on learning!

Never been a major fan of marine mammals and consequently the soon-to-be-published HMW edition doesn’t interest me all that much, but I’m really looking forward to the edition 5 with marsupials. The marvellous illustrations here only heighten my interest in the volume!
